Nieuwpoort (B)
Het wachten op onze terugkeer naar Griekenland blijft maar duren ...
België gaat in lockdown op 18 maart ( beslissing 17 maart ), Thuisblijven wordt de regel behalve om te gaan werken - geleidelijk aan wordt telewerk de regel -, niet-essentiële winkels, cafés, restaurants, bioscopen, theaters, concert-en evenementenzalen gaan dicht, scholen sluiten - on-line lesgeven neemt geleidelijk de plaats in. Behalve voor de noodzakelijke boodschappen mag men de woning verlaten gedurende 1 uur voor een sport/fysische gezondheidsactiviteit. In Europa gaan één na één de grenzen dicht. Niet-essentiële reizen zijn verboden. Vanaf 4 mei worden de eerste versoepelingen in het vooruitzicht gesteld ...
Hoewel twijfelend stellen we ons op 1 maart voorziene vertrek uit als we vernemen dateen ferry in de haven van Patras aan de kade ligt met enkele van besmetting verdachte passagiers ... We weten nog niet dat we tot 29 juni zullen moeten wachten vooraleer we eindelijk naar Griekenland kunnen vertrekken. Tot viermaal toe zullen we onze telkens verder vooruitgeschoven ANEK ferryreservatie vanuit Ancona moeten uitstellen - maar hoop doet leven ... Uiteindelijk zal Griekenland als een van de laatste Europese landen de grenzen op 1 juli openen ...
Intussen maken we van de nood een deugd en proberen we te genieten van de ( dit jaar ) prachtige lente aan de kust: op ons terras en tijdens de wandelingen waarbij we vooral het strand, dicht bij de waterlijn opzoeken ...
Une attente sans fin pour notre retour en Grèce ...
La Belgique entre en confinement le 18 mars (décision du 17 mars), Rester chez soi devient la règle sauf pour aller travailler - petit à petit le télétravail devient la règle -, les commerces non essentiels, cafés, restaurants, cinémas, théâtres, salles de concerts et d'événements sont fermés, les écoles ferment - l'enseignement en ligne se met progressivement en place. Hormis les courses nécessaires, on peut sortir de chez soi pendant 1 heure pour une activité sportive/pour la santé physique. Une à une, les frontières en Europe se ferment. Les voyages non essentiels sont interdits. A partir du 4 mai seulement, les premiers assouplissements sont attendus...
Bien qu'hésitants, nous reportons notre départ prévu le 1er mars quand nous apprenons qu'un ferry est à quai dans le port de Patras avec quelques passagers suspectés de contamination... nous ne savons pas encore qu'il nous faudra attendre le 29 juin avant de pouvoir finalement partir en Grèce. Jusqu'à quatre fois, nous devrons reporter notre réservation de ferry ANEK au départ d'Ancône toujours plus avancée puis reportée - mais l'espoir fait vivre ... Au final, la Grèce sera l'un des derniers pays européens à ouvrir ses frontières ... le 1er juillet.
En attendant, nous prenons notre mal en patience et essayons de profiter du beau printemps cette année à la côte: sur notre terrasse et lors des balades où nous fréquentons principalement la plage, au plus près des flots ...
An endless wait for our return to Greece ....
Belgium goes into lockdown on March 18 (decision March 17), Staying at home becomes the rule except for going to work - gradually teleworking becomes the rule -, non-essential shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, concerts event halls are closed and even schools - online teaching is gradually coming in place. Besides for the necessary shopping, it's only allowed to leave the house during 1 hour for a sport/physical health activity. In Europe, borders are closing one by one. Non-essential travel is prohibited. From May 4, the first relaxations are expected...
Although hesitating, we postpone our scheduled departure on March 1 when we learn that a ferry is at the quay in the harbour of Patras with a few passengers suspected of contamination ... We do not yet know that we will have to wait until June 29 before we finally start our to Greece. Up to four times we will have to postpone our ever further advanced ANEK ferry reservation from Ancona - but hope is alive ... In the end, Greece will be one of the last European countries to open its borders on July 1 ...
In the meantime, we make a virtue of necessity and try to enjoy the (this year) nice spring on the coast: on our terrace and during the walks where we mainly reach the beach, close to the waterline ...

Terug naar Grielenland
Terugkeer naar Griekenland via Frankrijk, Zwitserland en Italië. Vanuit Ancona oversteek van de Adriatische Zee naar Griekenland; waar we van de Ionische zijde naar de Egeïsche rijden om het Pilion schiereiland te bereiken.

Boot en huis in Griekenland wachtten op ons sinds begin maart ... corona : de vreselijke plannen-breker !
In Nieuwpoort komt eindelijk het toeristisch seizoen op gang, nu versoepelingen het sociaal en psychologisch ontwaken uit de lock-down nachtmerrie begeleiden ...
Nachtmerrie ? Mogen we heel eerlijk zijn ?
Ja, aan heel wat gewoonten kwam abrupt een einde: onze zoon en kleinkinderen zagen we eerst via smartfone,
of pc- en tablet scherm, dan eens per week even op 5 meter afstand, uiteindelijk eens per week gedurende een dertgtal minuten op 2 meter afstand in de tuin.
Geen etentjes samen, geen wandelingen, geen afhalen op school, geen zoentje ... We wilden risico's maximaal beperken. We schaften een nieuwe naaimachine aan
en stoffen maskers werden aangemaakt. Inkopen in de supermarkt werden on-line besteld en afgehaald via Collect and Go, mét masker !
Maar neen, want in Nieuwpoort hadden we alle ruimte en het weer was veelal onverwacht prachtig : vooral het strand en de promenade langs de IJzer hadden we,
eerst voor de dagelijkse 60' wandeling of fietstocht later voor wat langer, eigenlijk voor ons alleen. Nieuwpoort was en bleef verlaten ... zoals tijdens
winterse weekdagen ... en we vonden dit echt niet erg !
Maar begin juni werd het drukker en drukker ... de maatregelen die het stadsbestuur nam om de toenemende zomerse bezoekersstromen te kanaliseren konden ons
maar matig overtuigen. De fietsen lieten we in de berging, bij het dagelijks stappen meden we de minste drukte en zochten we het grote laagtij strand op
liefst dicht bij de waterlijn.
De echte veilige afzondering zouden we dus niet meer in Nieuwpoort vinden maar wel in Horto : in de grote tuin rond het huis en op onze zeilboot,
zeilend in de mooie Pagasitikos golf of op onze mooring.
We werkten een reisplanning uit met aandacht voor strikte veiligheid, en voorzagen een gevarieerde koeltas met heel wat lekkere pick-nick omwille van mogelijke drukte.
DAG 1. Via Calais, Reims, Dijon - pick-nick i.p.v. middagmaal in snelwegrestaurant - en Basel bereikten we het klein hotelletje dat we gereserveerd hadden
in een dorpje bij het Vierwoudenstedenmeer (CH), in plaats van ons drukke etappe-hotel in Frankrijk. In de zeer grote bijna volledig ontruimde
restaurantzaal - ontsmettende gel bij het binnenkomen -, waar we avondmaal en ontbijt gebruikten, waren slechts vijf tafels waarvan twee bezet waren
telkens koppels op 4 à 5 meter van elkaar.
DAG 2. Mededeling van een nieuw Grieks registratieformulier via email op onze smartphone ! Net voor de Gottardtunnel "zelf" tanken en masker bij het betalen met
bankkaart. Ontsmettende gel. Geen controle aan de CH/I grens. Problemen bij het downloaden van de vereiste Griekse PLF ( Passenger Locator Form ) wegens zwak
internetsignaal op autostrade parking en server overbelasting, wat later op de dag uiteindelijk na vele pogingen zal lukken. Moet 48 uur voor binnenkomen on-line ingediend zijn !!! Sobere pick-nick als middagmaal.
Het hotel in Pesaro kennen we door reeds heel wat stops. Aankomst in Pesaro rond 16:00LT. De stad werd zwaar getroffen na een uitstap van voetbalfans naar een wedstrijd in Bergamo !
We moeten hier dus niemand iets leren, maar nu is alles onder controle. In het hotel waar blijkbaar slechts twee kamers zijn ingenomen zijn alle veiligheidsmaatregelen
van kracht. Vanuit onze kamer ervaren we de vakantiesfeer want het is warm en zonnig, de Adriatische Zee is azuurblauw, de Bagni zijn naar Italiaanse gewoonte feilloos
georganiseerd, zonnebedden en parasols mooi gelijnd ... op meer dan dubbele afstand in vergelijking met normale tijden. Jongeren zien we zonder masker maar oudere
volwassenen lopen met masker - vele fietsen zelfs met masker ! Het valt ons ook op dat de meesten bij een praatje ver uit elkaar staan, we zien geen omarmingen,
geen handenschudden, geen geknuffel. Maar ook geen diner voor ons in het heel lekkere restaurant Polo Pasta & Pizza ( http://www.polopastaepizza.com ) dit jaar
want de zomerse drukte van Pesaro zelfs met alle corona-maatregelen laten we aan ons voorbij gaan. We genieten van het leuke zicht vanop ons terras:
de lekkere Parmaham, de olijven, de kersttomaatjessla en het koele witte wijntje smaken.
We zijn er bijna : morgen de ferry in Ancona.
DAG 3 : Korte rit naar Ancona. Druk verkeer tot op de haven parking. Bij de ANEK lines-check-in is het afhalen van de ticketten uitstekend geregeld
- in tegenstelling tot Minoan lines waar een te lange te dichte wachtrij staat.
We zien iedereen wel een mondmasker aandoen bij het uit de auto stappen. In minder dan een kwartier staan we op de inschepingsruimte.
Maskers alom. Er wordt goed afstand gehouden.
Om 11H00LT. Inscheping op de Hellenic Spirit. We hebben dit jaar een luxekajuit geboekt: ruimer en met meer comfort zodat het aangenamer is mochten we veel
meer tijd in de cabine doorbrengen. De maximale bezetting van de ferry is omwille van de coronamaatregelen beperkt tot 65% van de capaciteit.
Als de ferry om 14:45LT ( de boot vaart onder Griekse vlag = UTC +3 ) vertrekt zijn we al in het ruime restaurant: in totaal zullen 6 tafels finaal ingenomen worden
wat ons uitzicht geeft op een quasi verlaten eetzaal. We hebben beiden als voorgerecht een variatie van gegrilde groenten besteld en als hoofdschotel gefileerde
tsipoura en lavraki met verschillende garnituren. Zoals steeds in de ANEK restaurants is de presentatie
heel verzorgd en de kwaliteit perfect ... in tegenstelling tot de self-services die eerder gaarkeuken kwaliteit aanbieden. Aan boord is het dragen van mondmasker
voor iedereen ( uiteraard ook voor de bemanning ) verplicht.
Het avondeten gebruiken we in onze kajuit want het restaurant waar slechts de helft van de tafels mag worden gebruikt lijkt ons toch te druk. Het rijkelijke
ontbijt dat bij de kajuit hoort wordt om 06:00LT = Griekse tijd = UTC +3) geserveerd in de cabine.
Om 07H00LT loopt de Hellenic Spirit de haven Igoumenitsa aan. Kaat zal de auto uitrijden terwijl ik de bagage voor mijn rekening neem en de boot verlaat
via de loopbrug ... waar een gemaskeerde security-man onmiddellijk op mij afkomt en naar mijn PLF-document vraagt dat ik hem op mijn tablet toon.
Kaat heeft haar PLF op de smartphone. Wij worden niet gevraagd voor de random test maar bij het verlaten van de haven zien we een hele rij wachtenden om getest te worden.
Om 13:00LT komen we in Argalasti aan : even boodschappen doen in de kleine supermarkt. Zeer weinig volk, kassiersters met mondmaskers zoals wij !
En wat later komen we aan in onze splendid isolation, waar onze twee katten ons met verbazing zien verschijnen !
Retour en Grèce
Retour en Grèce par la France, la Suisse et l'Italie. D'Ancône traversée de l'Adriatique vers la Grèce, puis nous passons de la côte ionienne à l'égéenne, gagnant ainsi la péninsule du Pilion.

Bateau et maison en Grèce nous attendaient depuis début mars... corona : le terrible briseur de rêves ... et de plans !
La saison touristique démarre enfin à Nieuport, alors que les assouplissements accompagnent le réveil social et psychologique du cauchemar du confinement...
Cauchemar ? Soyons très honnêtes.
Oui, de nombreuses habitudes ont pris fin brutalement : nous avons d'abord vu notre fils et nos petits-enfants via smartphone,
ou écran PC et tablette, puis une fois par semaine à une distance de 5 mètres, parfois une fois par semaine pendant trente minutes à une distance de 2 mètres dans le jardin.
Pas de dîners ensemble, pas de balades, pas de récupération à l'école, pas de bisous... Nous voulions limiter au maximum les risques. Nous avons acheté une nouvelle machine à coudre'
et des masques en tissu ont été fabriqués. Les achats des supermarchés ont été commandés en ligne et récupérés via Collect and Go, avec masque !
Cauchemar ? Pas vraiment, car à Nieuport nous avions beaucoup d'espace et la météo était souvent très agréable - inattendu ! : nous avions la plage et la promenade le long de l'Yser bien souvent pour nous seuls, d'abord pour la marche quotidienne de 60' ou la balade à vélo - plus longue. Nieuport était et restait désert, abandonné... comme pendant les jours d'hiver en semaine... et cela ne nous dérangeait vraiment pas !
Mais début juin, il est venu de plus en plus de monde ... les mesures prises par le conseil municipal pour canaliser les flux croissants devenaient de moins en moins efficaces. nous avons délaissé nos bicyclettes, en marchant on évitait plus facilement le monde et la plupart du temps nous retrouvions la grande plage, à marée basse de préférence au plus près de la mer.
Nous ne trouverions donc plus le vrai isolement sûr à Nieuport, mais à Horto : dans le grand jardin autour de la maison et sur notre voilier,
en navigant dans le magnifique golfe Pagasitikos ou sur notre mouillage.
Nous avons élaboré un plan de voyage avec une attention particulière pour la sécurité et avons prévu des pique-niques suffisants afin d'eviter les lieux par trop fréquentés. .
JOUR 1. Via Calais, Reims, Dijon - pique-nique au lieu de déjeuner au restaurant d'autoroute - et Bâle nous atteignons le petit hôtel dans un village près du lac des Quatre-Cantons (CH) où nous avons réservé, au lieu de notre hôtel d'étape très fréquenté en France. Dans la très grande salle de restaurant - gel désinfectant en entrant -, où nous avons dîné et pris le petit-déjeuner, il n'y avait que cinq tables dont seuls deux étaient occupées par des couples - distants de 4 à 5 mètres.
JOUR 2. Message par e-mail sur notre smartphone qu'un nouveau formulaire d'inscription (PLF) grec doit être envoyé avant l'arrivée ! Faisons le plein tout juste avant le tunnel du Gottard ( masque obligatoire lors du paiement avec
carte bancaire ). Gel désinfectant. Pas de contrôle à la frontière CH/I. Problèmes de téléchargement du PLF grec (formulaire de localisation des passagers) requis,
signal internet ( trop ) faible sur le parking sur de l'autoroute et surcharge du serveur, plus tard dans la journée et après de nombreuses tentatives nous aurons plus de succès. Le PLF doit être soumis en ligne 48 heures avant l'entrée en Grèce !!! Pique-nique.
Nous connaissons déjà l'hôtel à Pesaro des précédents voyages. Arrivée à Pesaro vers 16h00 LT. La ville a été durement touchée par le covid-19 suite à un déplacement d'un grand nombre de supporters à Bergame pour un match de football, mais
maintenant l'épidémie semble plus ou moins sous contrôle. Dans l'hôtel où apparemment seulement deux chambres sont occupées; toutes les mesures de sécurité sanitaires sont en place.
De notre chambre, nous apprécions enfin l'atmosphère de vacances, il fait chaud et ensoleillé, la mer Adriatique est bleu azur, les Bagni sont " impeccablement organisés ", selon la " coutume italienne " , transats et parasols joliment alignés ... mais très espacés, bien plus que à l'accoutumée. On voit des jeunes sans masque mais la majorité se promènent masqués - même de nombreux cyclistes portent le masque ! Ces derniers aussi gardent une certaine distance entr'eux . On ne se donne pas la main, pas de bisous ni embrassades.
En ce qui nous concerne il n'y aura pas cette année de dîner dans le très agréable restaurant Polo Pasta & Pizza ( http://www.polopastaepizza.com ). . Nous profitons de la jolie vue depuis notre terrasse et dégustons du délicieux jambon de Parme, des olives, de la salade de tomates et du vin blanc frais.
Demain nous prendrons le ferry pour la Grèce à Ancône.
JOUR 3 : Nous gagnons Ancône d'assez bonne heure. Circulation intense vers le parking du port. Le check-in des lignes ANEK est parfaitement organisé
- contrairement aux lignes Minoan où la file d'attente est trop longue et assez désordonnée.
Le masque est de rigueur mais est mis spontanément. A peine un quart d'heure plus tard nous nous rendons à la zone d'embarquement.
Ici aussi masques et distance.
11H00 LT : embarquement sur le Hellenic Spirit. Cette année nous avons réservé une cabine de luxe: plus spacieuse et avec plus de confort, nous y passerons bien plus de temps. L'occupation maximale du ferry est limitée à 65% de la capacité , mais les passagers ne sont pas nombreux !
Lorsque le ferry quitte le port à 14H45 LT (le bateau navigue sous pavillon grec = UTC +3) nous sommes déjà dans le restaurant spacieux : au total 6 tables seront prises,
ce qui nous donne une vue sur une salle presque déserte. Nous avons tous les deux commandé une " variation "de légumes grillés en entrée et des filets de tsipoura et lavraki avec garnitures diverses en plat principal
. Comme toujours dans les restaurants à la carte ANEK, la présentation est
très soignée et la qualité est parfaite... contrairement aux self-services. Le port du masque à bord est
obligatoire pour tous, équipage compris.
Le soir nous dînons dans notre cabine car le restaurant où seule la moitié des tables peut être utilisée nous semble encore trop occupé.
Le copieux petit-déjeuner offert avec la cabine de luxe nous est servi dans la cabine à 06h00 LT = heure grecque = UTC +3).
A 07H00 LT le Hellenic Spirit fait escale au port d'Igoumenitsa. Kaat va sortir la voiture pendant que je m'occupe des bagages et quitte le bateau
par la passerelle... où un agent de sécurité masqué s'approche immédiatement de moi et me demande mon document PLF que je lui montre sur ma tablette.
Kate a son PLF sur le smartphone. On ne nous demande pas de faire de test ( des "random " tests, obligatoires sont prévus ), mais lorsque nous quittons le port, nous voyons toute une file de personnes qui attendent d'être testées.
A 13h00 LT nous arrivons à Argalasti : nous faisons quelques courses au petit supermarché. Il y a très peu de monde, les caissiers portent des masques comme nous !
Et un peu plus tard nous arrivons dans " notre splendide isolement ", où nos deux chats nous voient apparaître ... ébahis !

From Nieuwpoort (B) to Greece in corona time. ( 2020 ! )

Boat and house in Greece were waiting for us since the beginning of March ... corona : the terrible plan-breaker !
The tourism season is finally underway in Nieuwpoort, now that relaxations accompany the social and psychological awakening from the lock-down nightmare...
A nightmare ? Can we be honest?
Yes, many habits came to an abrupt end: we first saw our son and grandchildren only via smartphone,
or PC and on tablet screen. then once a week at a distance of 5 meters, eventually once a week for thirty minutes at a distance of 2 meters in the garden.
No dinners together, no walks, no pick-up at school, no kisses... We wanted to limit risks as much as possible. We bought a new sewing machine and made cotton
masks with filter inside.. Supermarket purchases were ordered on-line and collected via Collect and Go, always with mask!
But no, because in Nieuwpoort we had plenty of space and the weather was often unexpectedly beautiful: we especially had the beach and the promenade along the Yser, first for the daily 60' walk or cycling, later for a little more ... only for us. Nieuwpoort was and remained abandoned ... like during winter weekdays ... and we really didn't mind!
But at the beginning of June it got busier and busier ... the measures taken by the city council to regulate the increasing summer visitor flows could
but moderately convincing. We left the bicycles in the storage room, and when we were walking - every day ! - we avoided the least crowds and preferred the beach at low water,
close to the waterline.
We would therefore no longer find the real safe isolation in Nieuwpoort, but in Horto: in the large garden around the house and on our boat,
sailing in the beautiful Pagasetic gulf or on our mooring.
We made a travel plan with great attention to strict safety, and bought a varied cooler bag with a lot of nice picnics..
DAY 1. Via Calais, Reims, Dijon - pick-nick instead of the usual lunch in the highway restaurant - and Basel we reached the small hotel we had reserved
in a village close to Lake Lucerne (CH), instead of our busy stopover hotel in France. In the very large restaurant room - disinfecting gel when entering -, where we had dinner and breakfast, there were only five tables of which two were taken by couples at 4 to 5 meters distance.
DAY 2. Message that a new Greek registration form will be required; diesel fill up just before the Gottard tunnel, mask when paying, credit card, disinfecting gel . No control at the CH/I border. Problems for downloading the required Greek PLF ( Passenger Locator Form ) due to the weak
internet connection on the motorway parking and the probably server overload - success later on and after a lot of attempts. The PLF must be submitted on-line 48 hours before entry !!! Quick pick-nick for lunch.
We already know the hotel in Pesaro after previous stops. Arrival in Pesaro around 16H00 LT. The city was hit hardly by corona after a trip of football fans to Bergamo !
So we don't have to teach anyone anything here, and now the situation is under control. In the hotel where apparently only two rooms have been taken, all safety measures are in effect.
From our room we experience the holiday atmosphere because it is warm and sunny, the Adriatic Sea is azure blue, the Bagni are flawless organized according to this Italian rite organized, sunbeds and umbrellas nicely lined ... but at more than double distance compared to normal times. We see young people without a mask but older ones and adults walk with mask - and also many cyclists! People are keeping distance when having a chat, no hugs, kisses, no shaking hands.
But also no dinner for us in the very nice restaurant Polo Pasta & Pizza ( http://www.polopastaepizza.com ) this year. So
we enjoy the nice view from our terrace:
enjoy the delicious Parma ham, the olives, the cherry tomato salad and the cool white wine.
Greece we are almost there: tomorrow we take the ferry in Ancona.
DAY 3: Quick drive to Ancona. Busy traffic to the harbour parking. The ANEK-lines check-in is very well and safe organised
- not so the Minoan lines where the queue is long and chaotic.
We see how everyone is putting on a mask when leaving car. In less than fifteen minutes we are reach the embarkation area.
Masks and distance.
11H00 LT. Embarkation on the Hellenic Spirit. This year we have booked a lux cabin : more spacious and with more comfort, nice now that we 'll spend more time in the cabin. Due to the corona measures, the maximum occupancy of the ferry is limited to 65% of the capacity.
When the ferry leaves at 14H45 LT ( the boat sails under the Greek flag = UTC +3 ) we are already in the spacious restaurant: in total 6 tables will be taken.
which gives us a view of an almost deserted dining room. We both ordered a variation of grilled vegetables as starter and as a main
tsipoura and lavraki fillets. As always in the ANEK ã la Carte restaurants, presentation and service are
very well and the quality is perfect ... in contrast to the self-service restaurants. Masks are mandatory on board for all.
In the evening we eat in our cabin because the restaurant where despite only half of the tables can be used it seems us too busy.
The lux cabin included rich breakfast is served in the cabin at 06:00LT = Greek time = UTC +3).
At 07H00 LT the Hellenic Spirit arrives at the port of Igoumenitsa. Kate will drive out the car while I take care of the luggage and leave the boat by the gangway ... where a masked security man immediately asks for my PLF document that I show on my tablet.
Kate has her PLF on the smartphone. We are not asked for the ( mandatory ) random test, but when we leave the harbour we see a large queue on the test desk.
At 13H00 LT we arrive in Argalasti : in the small supermarket where we do a quick shopping, very few people, cashiers with masks and gel at the entrance.

ATHENS — Greece will enter a second nationwide lockdown this weekend in an effort to halt a recent coronavirus surge, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Thursday.
All shops other than supermarkets and pharmacies will close and travel between regions will be banned. Authorities are also reintroducing a text messaging system to grant people permission to leave their homes — which is allowed only for work, shopping for essentials, visiting a doctor or exercising.
High schools will close and teach via distance learning, but — unlike during the spring lockdown — kindergartens and primary schools will remain open. It's unclear whether churches will continue operating.
The measures, which go into effect on Saturday and remain in place for at least three weeks, come just days after the government ordered bars, restaurants and non-essential businesses to shut.
Mitsotakis said that a surge in new cases over the last five days had “forced” him to take action now, adding that he could not afford to wait and see if the recently adopted measures worked and risk an “unbearable” pressure on hospitals.
Main opposition Syriza party is accusing the government of a “total failure” in managing the pandemic's second wave. Until late Wednesday, the government had ruled out an imminent lockdown.
Cases in Greece, which weathered the first wave better than many European countries, began to rise gradually over the summer. Daily infections plateaued at around 400 from late September to mid-October, but more than doubled and then quadrupled in recent days. Health authorities reported a new daily record on Wednesday, with 2,646 new infections and 18 deaths.
Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias said on Wednesday that 72 percent of intensive care beds in Athens were already occupied, while in northern Greece 80-90 percent are full, up from just 20 percent two weeks ago.
Mitsotakis said the government would financially support citizens affected by the lockdown, including an increase in emergency income support for workers on suspended contracts.

The GREEK TAXNUMMER Α.Φ.Μ. [A.F.M.]: an other - significant ! - experience with the Greek bureaucracy
The so-called taxnumber Α. Φ. Μ. [A.F.M.] is a national number (in Belgium the identification number in the National Register of Natural Persons is officially called national register number ) or - in some countries - a social security number. From the age of 18 years all Greeks have the obligation to get a taxnumber The Α. Φ. Μ. [A.F.M.] consists of 9 digits. Until a few years ago, a taxsnumber was not required for a non-resident foreigner who was staying in Greece little longer than a short touristic period but not involved by contractual services (e.g. a phone and or internet account ). In matters where a taxnumber was required, for example to obtain a DEKPA before the 1st of January 2017 , it was allowed - and it's still - to fulfil some formalities with the help of a willing Greek friend. So our Greek friend accompanied us in Volos, first to the Office of the Port Police/Coastguard to fill up the request form, then to the Tax Office in order to pay the tax of 29.35 euro. A temporary and to this matter limited statement for the use of his taxnumber saved us the procedure to obtain a personal taxnumber. The whole issue of tax discipline and tax collection has, however, led to the fact that a personal taxnumber is more and more required: so for the conclusion of a contract e.g. with an internet and / or mobile/phone provider, when renting a house or apartment, to purchase an insurance, in order to register a vessel under Greek flag or a motor vehicle, and even to pay a fine. In short, in most contractual issues or actions when the Greek administration is directly or indirectly involved. In 2008 arriving in Greece after our Italian coasts sailings we could get a VODAFONE internet account only by Direct debit of our credit card without having a personal taxnumber but by providing also a cruising statement issued for this purpose by the K&G marina in Corfu. The other phone and internet providers - COSMOTE, WIND - required a private taxnumber.
